Japanese Garden Design, Part II

In Part I (September 21), the course will introduce you to the storied history behind traditional Japanese Gardens, the philosophies that have cultivated traditional Japanese garden design, and optimal garden design techniques that are centuries old.
Part II (September 28) of the course will include plant and garden ornament identification and selection and details of plant health and soil amendment and supplementation.
Part III (October 5) will cover rock, Zen, “Strolling”, and compact gardens (tsuboniwa) and utilizing lighting and the creation of bamboo fencing (kinkakuji-gaki) for practical and aesthetic design principles. Throughout the course, participants will be building a portfolio of information, ideas, and sample garden design plans.
The course instructor, Mr. Mickey J. Lollar, is a graduate student in History at the University of North Alabama. In addition to being a certified teacher of the Social Sciences, English-Language Arts, Art History and Practice, and Music, Mr. Lollar is a writer, lecturer, and extensive traveler and is focusing his graduate studies of Heritage Resource Management (including Historical Landscaping) and Archaeology on Asia. In addition, being the son of the instructor of “Floral Design,” graduating with a Floral Design certificate, and being a student of the Alabama Master Gardeners curriculum, Mickey has a well-established history in the botanical and landscaping industries.
